Denver Bronco Player Spotlight: Peyton Hillis

peyton_hillis_1 The rumor lately is that Peyton Hillis may not be   safe when it comes to being moved to another team. I cannot state strongly enough how against this I am. Yes, he just finished his first season. Yes, he was injured towards the end. No, he did not put up flashy numbers.

You know what he did do that not many other players seemed to manage this past year? He brought a drive, determination and spark to the team that proved to be a winning ingredient. Don’t believe me?

Hillis appeared in 12 games this year and started 6. Out of those 6 games, Chiefs Broncos FootballDenver won 4 of them. On 68 carries he gained 343 yards averaging 5 yards a carry. He had 14 receptions for 179 yards, averaging 12.8 yards a catch. Hillis also had 5 rushing touchdowns and one receiving. In case you are checking, he was second in carries on the team to Michael Pittman only, first in yards gained and first in average among running backs (Eddie Royal averaged more per carry than anyone) and he had the most rushing touchdowns on the team.

His 12.8 yards a catch was 4th on the team which was better than Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal and Brandon Stokley. Not to mention, if anyone watched him play he gutted out some serious yards and first downs when they mattered including a punishing hit on Chiefs’ safety Bernard Pollard. Oh and he had no fumbles either.

The fact is, this kid is a football player and a winner. Start him at fullback, start him at running back or bring him in as a reserve 10 – 15 touches a game…I don’t care. The bottom line is, with him in the lineup and his hands on the ball, good things seem to happen more often than not. Trading this young talent away would be a major mistake, he could be such a dominating complimentary piece to any other back that it is ridiculous to even fathom playing without him. The Broncos need a guy like this on the team, in any way possible.
